1. Harvest Your Bounty
September is a prime time for harvesting many fruits and vegetables. Take advantage of the late-summer sun and enjoy the fruits of your labor (literally!).
2. Plant Fall Vegetables
Don't let your garden go to waste! Start planting cool-season vegetables like broccoli, spinach, and kale for a fall harvest.
3. Extend the Season
Protect your plants from the colder nights with row covers or cloches to extend your growing season. Enjoy fresh produce longer!
4. Prepare for Winter
Clear out your garden beds and prepare for winter. Amend the soil with compost and mulch to ensure healthy plants next spring.
5. Start Seedlings
Get a head start on next year's garden by starting seeds indoors. September is the perfect time to begin growing cool-season crops.
6. Divide Perennials
Divide your perennials to create new plants and give your existing ones room to thrive. This is also a great time to plant new perennials.
7. Prune Trees and Shrubs
Give your trees and shrubs a final pruning before winter to promote healthy growth and prevent disease.
8. Clean Up Fallen Leaves
Rake up fallen leaves and compost them for use in your garden. This will enrich your soil and reduce waste.
9. Enjoy the Colors
September is a beautiful time to enjoy the changing colors of your garden. Capture the beauty with photographs or simply admire nature's artistry.
10. Plan for Next Year
Take some time to reflect on your garden this year and plan for next season. Consider what you want to change, improve, or expand on.
